If you want to watch sunset at the prettiest spot in the US, then look no further. Visit what many people say is the most beautiful overlook of Lake Powell: Alstrom Point in Utah.
My cousin and I visited this spot on our road trip to the Southwest and were blown away. 🤯 I have traveled all over the US and this is still a place I dream of returning. There were only four other people at this spot when we visited, which was a magical experience.
Very few visitors go to the point, due to the treacherous roads that lead to the overlook. If you want to go, you’re going to need to do plan ahead. You can find everything you need to know about getting to Alstrom Point, camping at Alstrom Point, and watching the sunset there below.
Tip: You Will need 4 Wheel Drive and a high clearance vehicle to get to Alstrom Point!

Your Guide to Alstrom Point
What is Alstrom Point?
Alstrom Point is a point in Utah that overlooks Glen Canyon and is widely known as the most picturesque spot in Lake Powell. Getting to this spot is rather difficult and few people know about it, so it’s very quiet. Skilled photographers travel to this spot to get the best shots of the lake. It is very special and worth the visit.
When Should You Go there?
The best time to visit Alstrom Point is right before sunset and after. You will see stunning colors reflect off of the canyons and the water’s surface. It was one of the prettiest sunsets I have ever seen in my life, and I will never forget it.
You can visit this spot at any time of year, but the ideal time to visit Lake Powell is in the spring time. The water level is usually higher and temperatures are fairly mild!
What is Alstrom Point?
First and foremost, you can expect that you will be mostly alone. When we went there were two other groups there, but they were spread far apart from each other. As you look out over the canyon, you can expect to see a few boats, but otherwise it’s quiet.
Things To Expect
- Starry skies
- No cell service
- Colorful sunrises and sunsets
- Few other people
How do you get there?
If you don’t have a 4 wheel drive vehicle then you should not attempt to go to Alstrom Point on your own. The only way to get to this spot is to drive an hour outside of Page, Arizona, take a few highways, and eventually go on dirt roads where you will need good tires. When my cousin and I visited this area, we only had our camper van, so we booked a tour to the spot.
Very few people know about it, so we had the tour to ourselves and our guide was a local Native American who told us all about the area. He had lots of interesting stories to tell us and he was unfazed by the rocky road. You can find detailed directions to the spot here. Give yourself plenty of extra time to get to and from the point, in case you have a hard time following the road.
Can you Camp at Alstrom Point?
Yes! Alstrom Point is one of the best spots to camp in the Lake Powell area, because it is unpopulated, free, and has stunning views! You can watch the sunset over the canyon, wake up early and watch it rise as well.
There is plenty of area for dispersed camping around this spot. It’s also incredibly remote, so your views of the night sky are unbeatable 🌙 . You’ll have an unforgettable camping experience if you choose to do so. Make sure to pack in and pack out everything that you will need!

Oh my goodness, I can see why you loved Alstrom Point so much. It’s stunning! My husband has spent a good deal of time at Lake Powell, but somehow I always missed out on those trips. I’ll have to ask him if he’s ever been to Alstrom Point before! Either way, I know where we’re headed next time we’re in Utah…
