Detailed Guide on Where to Stay in the Banff Area
Banff Area: A Quick Overview
Banff Canada is located on the Western most line of Alberta, Canada in the Canadian Rockies. It’s home to incredible hiking, gorgeous mountain drives, and teaming wildlife.
If it’s your first time exploring Banff, there are a variety of options for your stay.
In order to understand where to base yourself, you’ll want to get the basic geography or the lay of the land. Below you will see a map, that outlines the location of the towns of Golden, Lake Louise, Canmore Banff, and Jasper.
Banff, Canmore, and Lake Louise are all great home bases if you want to be near Banff National Park. While Golden is further from Banff, it’s close to Yoho National Park and a lot of other adventurous activities.
If you want to explore the Icefields Parkway or Jasper at all during your trip then I recommend staying in Banff/Lake Louise/Canmore area for the first part and then moving to Jasper for a couple of days. 🚙
Below, I’ll do a deep dive into each town so you can make a more informed decision about where to stay near Banff.
Banff: For the Main Attractions
Banff is truly the central area and the most famous town when you’re thinking about the Canadian Rockies, which comes with positives and negatives.
It’s home to Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, great skiing mountains and other stunning areas within Banff National Park. In terms of location, it simply cannot be beat because it’s central to everything.
However, because it has name recognition, it’s also more crowded and usually a bit pricier than the surrounding areas. Hotel rooms can cost around $500 CAD a night or more!
Like many other highly-traveled tourist areas, Banff is somewhat overrun with crowds 👬👭 especially during the summertime. Don’t expect to walk down the main street without dodging other humans or walking in groups as you cross a light.
Banff is perfect for families that want to be central to the action, individuals who need to rely on public transportation 🚌, or people who enjoy people watching. If you want to be a part of the liveliness, there’s no better place to be.
Where to Stay in Banff
As I mentioned earlier, Banff is the central location of the area. It’s growing popularity has become almost overwhelming.
This means that a lot of the hotels and restaurants haven’t been updated in many years. You’ll find a lot of simplicity in rooms and on the menus.
That being said, there are still hotels that are worth choosing in Banff! Below are the ones that I recommend.
Rimrock Resort Hotel
Nestled atop Sulphur Mountain 🏔, you’ll find the Rimrock Resort Hotel. This hotel has some of the best views in the area and is a luxurious stay.
You’ll find a selection of suites within the hotel that can accommodate couples or larger groups. Many of these rooms have spectacular views of the mountains and Bow River right outside your window!
Although it’s a bit outside of town, The RimRock offers shuttles that will take you from the hotel to downtown Banff. So, it’s convenient for all the guests.
However, you don’t even have to leave the hotel to get food. There is a selection of three restaurants, a cafe, and two different bars within the lodge. You’ll be set for your trip!
It’s a great choice whether you’re traveling as a couple or with a family. There’s really something for everyone at this stunning resort.

Fairmont Banff Springs
When I think “Fairmont,” I think of luxurious stays in remarkable hotels. The Fairmont Banff Springs is no exception.
It’s a 5 star resort that they refer to as the “Castle in the Rockies” and it truly looks like a palace from one of your favorite fairytales. So, you can feel like royalty when you spend a night or two here.
This hotel has been around since 1888 and it’s known for its dedicated service and world class amenities. They will guide you through your vacation and make sure that you are getting the most out of the area.
Plus, if you are an active individual the hotel offers plenty of ways to recreate on the property itself like the tennis courts or golf course. ⛳️
But, staying here will cost you a bit of money with rooms averaging anywhere from $400-1000 CAD a night. That being said, you will get your money’s worth!

Moose Hotel
As you walk down the streets of Banff, you may walk by the Moose Hotel. This wonderful hotel is just off of the main street in Banff, framed by the mountains, so there’s truly no better location!
If you’re looking for convenience, then this is truly the place to stay.
It’s an incredibly family friendly spot. Each room is a suite that has a mini fridge and stove, plus it’s pet friendly! 🐶 And, every single room comes with free parking and bus passes.
I don’t think you could have a hotel that is more convenient than this one!

Peaks Hotel
Peaks Hotel is one of the newer hotels in town with a modern look and amazing locations. It’s just steps away from the town of Banff, but still has a backdrop of the mountains.
It’s close to the Banff Gondola and looks over the town itself.
This hotel is more modern if you are looking for something that’s been updated. While the Peaks Hotel is quieter and focuses on a serene atmosphere, you can access their sister hotel, Banff Park Lodge, just steps away.
At Banff Park Lodge, you’ll find things like restaurants, shopping, and the pools.

Camping in Banff
Banff has a number of great campgrounds within the park. However, I’d choose between Two Jack Campground and Tunnel Mountain.
Two Jack is right off the shores of Two Jack Lake, which is just down the road from Lake Minnewanka and 10 minutes ride from downtown Banff.
While Tunnel Mountain Village is just outside of the town of Banff and it’s huge. It has 800 campgrounds, so there are options for everyone from tents to RV spots with electric hook ups.
These campgrounds accept reservations and I recommend making them in advance on the Parks Canada website!
Pros and Cons of Staying in Banff
Pros:
- Its central location. Banff is close to all of the main attractions, which makes it the easiest place to get between places. Many places are within a 10-20 minute trip.
- Public transportation. Unlike other areas in Banff, Banff actually has a fairly good public transportation system. There are buses and shuttles that run throughout the town and take you to various things. So, if you aren’t driving this is a big win!
- Wealth of options. Because it’s the largest town in the area, there are a ton of hotels, shops, and restaurants to choose from. You’re truly in the heart of things and home to all the action.
Cons:
- Expensive parking. Even when I’m not staying in Banff, I always end up visiting town. But, the parking is extremely expensive near the downtown area! So, if you don’t want to pay you’ll need to park on the edge of town and walk in.
- Expensive. Because it’s the famous town, most of the stays in Banff are very expensive. It has the name recognition and the central location. But, you will pay for those conveniences.
- Lots of crowds. People come from all over to see Banff and that means the town is extremely packed. The main avenue and restaurants throughout Banff usually see hundreds if not thousands of tourists a day! So, you won’t get much peace and quiet.
- Outdated and basic. Banff simply doesn’t have enough time to keep up with all of the tourists throughout. So, they haven’t been able to update things or renovate the area. Many of the restaurants and hotels are very basic and lack excitement or good food.
Lake Louise: For a Quieter Time Near Nature
Now, if you want to get away from the craziness of Banff town and escape to nature, consider lodging in Lake Louise.
Lake Louise is much quieter with just a few restaurants and shops in the town itself. But, you will be conveniently located near Lake Louise and the shuttles to Moraine Lake, which are some of the hallmark destinations in the area.
I stayed at the Mountaineer Lodge on my first trip to Lake Louise. Although it was fairly bare bones, I loved being close to the gorgeous lake and hikes nearby.
Travelers should that stay in Lake Louise typically like being in a central spot, but in a more serene environment. That being said, it does get crowded during the days, but it quiets by night!
It’s also one of the best places to stay if you want to ski ⛷. Lake Louise is home to a large ski resort, which is a wonderful place for winter sports.
Where to Stay in Lake Louise
Lake Louise has a lot less options than places like Canmore or Banff. So, you’re really choosing from just a few hotels and the campground in Lake Louise. That being said, I loved being based in Lake Louise on our first trip to the Banff area!
Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
If I had all the money in the world, then I would stay at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise on every single trip to Banff. 😍
There is truly nothing as iconic as this hotel. It sits right on the shores of the turquoise Lake Louise and has beautiful architecture. The hotel recently went through renovations, so you can expect updated rooms and amenities on your trip!
Because of its incredible location, you can walk out the doors and head directly on a hike or a canoe ride on the lake.
On the inside there are numerous shops, bars, and restaurants to choose from. I went to the bar on my first trip into the area, but they do give preference to hotel guests. So, if you want to visit the bar, I recommend getting reservations.
Rooms at the Fairmont can range from $400 CAD to $1000 a night depending on the room type and season.

Mountaineer Lodge
I stayed at the Mountaineer Lodge on my very first trip to the Banff area and it was the perfect home base. It was conveniently situated walking distance from everything in town and 5 minutes from Lake Louise.
Although the hotel is rather simple, it’s still a perfect place to stay and they have updated since I went years ago.
It’s nice for families and the prices are usually very reasonable. Plus, it includes things that help save you money like free parking and complimentary breakfasts!
It’s great for skiiers in the winter time with laundry machines, places in the room for wet gear, and a free shuttle to Lake Louise ski resort.

Camping in Lake Louise
Luckily, there’s also a very large campground in Lake Louise if you want to fully immerse yourself in nature.
The Lake Louise campground has 206 soft-sided spots for tents, vans or small RVs, with 189 hard-sided spots for larger vehicles.
There are bathrooms at the campground, as well as bear containers and an electric fence to keep them out.
Campsites are reservable and often sell out in the summertime. But, I was able to claim a spot just a day before I went in September.
Pros and Cons of Staying in Lake Louise
Pros:
- Close to nature. Everywhere you stay in Lake Louise is very close to the lake itself. So, you can easily get to hikes nearby or go for a canoe on the lake.
- Quiet. If you want some peace from the chaos of Banff, then this is the place to stay. It feels like you can actually have space to yourself here.
- Great skiing. Lake Louise is home to a wonderful ski resort. Individuals come from all over to ski at this mountain.
Cons:
- Less shops around. Like I said, it’s very quiet. But that also means there are less restaurants or places to walk around. You’ll have to drive to Banff for more options.
- Lots of tourists during the day. While it’s quiet in the evening, Lake Louise and Moraine Lake are two of the most visited destinations. So, the lake gets VERY crowded during the days!
Canmore: For a Fun Time & More Budget Options
Honestly, I would choose to stay in Canmore on every single trip to Banff. It’s the place that I tell my friends to stay and it’s also where I’d move if I had a choice.
Canmore is a super inviting town with great mountain vibes, cool people, and restaurants.
It’s about 15-20 minutes from Banff, so you may have to drive a little further for all your excursions. But, in my mind it’s worth it.
There are great walking paths in town, a cute shopping area, and it’s also outside of the Kananaskis with countless hikes and lakes to explore!
You could spend weeks just doing various excursions in Kananaskis. 🥾 So, you can consider adding this area to your Banff trip.
Plus, there are a plethora of great VRBOs and hotels to choose from, that are usually less than the ones in Banff. We stayed in a VRBO in Canmore that was designed like a ski lodge with a pool, hot tub, and cafe.
Where to Stay in Canmore
Canmore has been built up a lot in just a few years with new lodging and restaurants. You’ll find that there are a lot of places to choose from and you may want to start with VRBO. I’ve linked the property that we enjoyed.
However, if you’d prefer the amenities of a hotel, I’ve listed the best places to stay in Canmore below!
Blackstone Mountain Lodge
Blackstone Mountain Lodge is a member of the CLIQUE hotels and it’s set in the heart of downtown Canmore. It was built in 2008 and has a modern look to it, so it’s perfect for an individual that likes a newer space.
The hotel itself has multiple options including simple rooms or condos with up to four bedrooms. That way, you can stay with friends or family.
Also, you can enjoy the courtyard space with your group to have a BBQ while surrounded by the gorgeous mountains.
While most guests enjoy their stay at Blackstone, there have been some complaints about highway noise. 📢 So, as long as you are a heavier sleeper this won’t affect you as much.
It’s a great option for a group!

Stoneridge Mountain Resort
Stoneridge Mountain Resort is another one of the greatest Canmore accommodations. It’s designed in the typical ski resort style with suites for the rooms.
Each suite comes with its own kitchen, so that you can prepare food throughout the duration of your visit and a fireplace to relax by.
It’s also just steps away from downtown Canmore, which makes it a convenient place to call home for your vacation.

- Outdoor dry sauna
- Fitness center
Basecamps Resorts Canmore
Basecamps Canmore is a boutique hotel with a modern feel. There are a number of Basecamp hotels throughout the Canadian Rockies.
These hotels often appeal to younger crowds, people seeking community, or those that are craving adventures. While they encourage people to stay to meet other guests by having communal BBQs 🍔 or chat on the patios.
They sometimes offer discounts on activities in the area.
Individuals check in remotely to their rooms and the lodging is somewhat sparser, but still have amazing views!
While these hotels are more basic, they also often offer fairer prices for your stay. So, it can be wonderful for people who need to stick to a budget.

Camping in Canmore
Like I said earlier, Canmore is just outside of Kananaskis and the Bow Valley area. There are a number of campgrounds to stay at in Kananaskis with RV and tent options.
Remember to make reservations for campgrounds in this area.
Bow Valley Campground is just 5 km from Canmore and it’s off of the Transcontinental Highway. It sits on the river and many locals recommend it!
If you are looking for other spots you can try the Bow River Campground, Three Sisters Campground, or Willow Rock Campground.
Pros and Cons of Staying in Canmore
Pros:
- Lively mountain town. I don’t know about you, but I love staying in a place that has a buzzing vibe. There are so many places to explore in town and eat at.
- Cheaper lodging. Hotels and VRBOs are often more reasonably priced in Canmore. In fact, I got an airbnb in July just a couple days in advance for a week and it didn’t break the bank!
- Close to nature. There’s a walking path along the river in town. But, it’s also the gateway to Kananaskis.
- Newer hotels. Hotels are often a lot newer in Canmore, because this place has grown so much. So, they are updated with great amenities.
Cons:
- Further away. Canmore is about 15-20 minutes from Banff. So, you will need to tack on those minutes to anything you explore in the Banff & Lake Louise area.
- Very popular town. Again, if you want a place that’s quieter, this is not the spot. There are hordes of locals and tourists in town, but I don’t think it’s overwhelming.
Golden: For Small Town Vibes & Adventure
Sitting just over the line in British Columbia, Golden is one of the best adventurous destinations in the Canadian Rockies.
It’s within a 2 hour drive from 5 National parks, home to Kicking Horse Ski Resort, and the wild Kicking Horse River. You could spend weeks just exploring this area.
Plus, Golden has a real small town vibe with most locals knowing each other, a quiet main street of town, and peaceful atmosphere.
On the other hand, if you are using Golden as a home base for Banff, then you will need to be in the car a lot. Most places in the Banff area are about an hour to 90 minutes away from Golden itself!
Golden is the perfect place for the individual that is seeking adventure. Choose from whitewater rafting on the Kicking Horse, hiking up into Glacier National Park, going on the adventure course at Golden Skybridge, or skiing on the mountain!
There’s truly so much to choose from in this area, that you might forget about Banff. I recommend staying here for a couple days and you can read more about it here.
Where to Stay in Golden
Golden is a much quieter place to stay than all of the other towns on this list. I really enjoyed spending a weekend here and just reveling in the serene atmosphere.
I recommend looking at VRBOs in this area, because they are usually less expensive and closer to town. Many of the Golden accommodations tend to be up the mountain in Kicking Horse. We stayed in this one and had a great time!
Glacier Mountaineer Lodge or Kicking Horse Lodging
Glacier Mountaineer Lodge is a part of the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. It’s on top of the mountain and about 15 minutes outside of Golden.
This resort is a great place to stay if you love to ski, because the mountain is just outside your door. So, you can’t get much closer than that and the views are spectacular!
Within the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort you’ll find options including hotel rooms, suites, or vacation homes. Which means you can choose the kind of accommodation that’s right for you.
However, if you choose the Glacier Mountaineer Lodge, it does get mixed reviews from people because the rooms are a bit on the smaller size.

Copper Horse Lodge
While Glacier Mountaineer Lodge is at the top of the mountain, Copper Horse Lodge is at the base of the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. So, you simply have to take the gondola up to start your adventure.
Again, it’s similarly outside of the town of Golden itself. So, it’s a bit less convenient if you want to stay near a lot of shops and restaurants.
People really love staying at the Copper Horse Lodge and its perfect for ski fanatics in the winter, mountain bikers in the summer 🚴♀️, or couples that want to enjoy the scenery!

- Bicycle parking, and ski storage
- Free on-site private parking
Camping in Golden
Golden has one campground in town, the Golden Municipal Campground. We stayed there one summer and it was very peaceful.
You can choose to get a spot that’s right on the river and enjoy the water rushing by.
Plus, this campground offers showers in the restrooms. Again, reservations are recommended during the peak months of the year, which are in the summertime.
Pros and Cons of Staying in Golden
Pros:
- Adventure abounds. Not only are there five National Parks nearby, but there’s so much more you can do from whitewater rafting to mountain biking.
- Small town vibes. If you really want to escape crowds, Golden has a small town feel to it and locals know each other. In fact, I left a laptop in Golden and some nice local drove it all the way to Jasper for me!
- Stays with character for less. Because it’s got small town vibes, most of the best places to stay are local homes. They have a lot of character and are usually cheaper.
Cons
- Far from Banff. Golden is about an hour from Banff, which means lots of long drives if you want to explore that area. We used it as a home base one year and we put a lot of kilometers on our car.
- Less dining options. You can tell right away that Golden is a small town, which means there are less places to eat at. That being said the meals we had there were delicious.
Jasper: A Must Add to Your Itinerary
I always recommend that first time visitors go to both Banff & Jasper. While Banff has the name recognition, Jasper is another incredible spot in the Canadian Rockies!
Jasper is home to half of the Icefields Parkway as well as Jasper National Park.
If you are taking the famous Rocky Mountaineer Train, then this gorgeous ride takes you right to the town of Jasper.
Although it still gets a fair amount of visitation, it has more of a small town vibe, than Banff. Many people live here to enjoy the outdoors and work at the ski resort.
While there was a major wildfire in 2024 that wiped out a lot of town and the natural area around, it’s still a place you need to visit! Plus, they could use your support now more than ever.
You can check the Parks Canada websites for up to date information on closures and openings in Jasper.
I recommend spending a few days in the Banff area, before driving up the Icefields Parkway to explore Jasper for a couple of days on the end of your trip!
Plus, if you’re a skiier, Marmot Basin, is one of the best ski areas in the Canadian Rockies. So, you don’t want to miss it.
Where to Stay in Jasper
I really enjoy the lodges within Jasper National Park. They’re nestled in the heart of the mountains and provide peace and quiet.
Also, many of these lodges have shuttles to the ski resort and are close to the adorable downtown area! I’ll do a thorough dive into the best places to stay in Jasper below.
Pyramid Lake Lodge
Pyramid Lake Lodge sits right on the lake and it’s the perfect place to stay with families!
I stayed here a few summers ago and it felt like I was at summer camp. They offer free kayaks & paddleboards, as well as yoga classes, other activities, and s’mores!
You are located right on the water, so you can easily go for a boat ride or find an incredible hike nearby.
For all you wildlife lovers, you might be lucky enough to see a grizzly bear or a moose hanging out by the water’s edge. We saw a grizzly roaming down the street while we were out on our patio. Just remember, to keep your distance!
It’s truly a fantastic place to stay and I would go back if I could.

Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge
The Fairmonts are known as luxury hotels. So, if you don’t mind shelling out some money, then this is an amazing place to spend a couple nights.
The Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge is set in the mountains along the shores of Lac Beauvert. This amazing resort encompasses over 700 acres in the mountains and feels like you’re in your own world.
Plus, it offers an incredible spa, fitness center, and boats to take out on the lake.
If you want a gorgeous stay in an idyllic setting, then this is the spot for you. As long as you can spend up to $900 CAD on a room. 💸

The Crimson
For those visitors that want to stay in the town of Jasper itself, The Crimson is a great spot to choose.
This hotel is just off of the main street in downtown Jasper and it’s set in front of the stunning mountains. It’s a family friendly destination for your vacation.
It’s run by the Pursuit Collection that runs many of the tours and lodging in the area. They are a dependable company with great customer service. So, you know you’ll have a nice stay.

Camping in Jasper
For those who are visiting in an RV or prefer to camp, you can stay at the Wapiti Campground in Jasper National Park.
This park has 125 campgrounds to choose from, with some of the spots offering electric plug in.
It’s just off of the Icefields Parkway and minutes from the town of Banff, so it’s a wonderful campground to stay in!
Pros and Cons of Staying in Jasper
Pros:
- Gorgeous destination. Jasper National Park has a ton of places to explore from Maligne Lake to Athabasca Glacier. There’s tons of things you’ll want to see.
- Great lodging. Although resorts can be pricey, there are so many gorgeous hotels that have views of the mountains or are right on the lake.
- Cute downtown. Similar to Canmore, Jasper is a charming town to stay in with many locals and great restaurants. Plus, you’re right near the skiing resort at Marmot Basin.
Cons:
- Far from the airport. Jasper is about 4 hours from both Calgary and Edmonton airport, which means you’ll have to ride long distances to get there.
- Wildfire damage. The town and park are still recovering from the 2024 wildfire, which means that some areas are still closed.
FAQs About Staying in Banff
Is Canmore or Banff Better to Stay In?
Honestly, the answer to this question is dependent on the person.
As I described above, I would choose Canmore over Banff because it’s got a more interesting atmosphere and is less crowded. However, you’ll have to drive more.
Banff is more centrally located to the various activities. So, it may be better on your first visit to the area.
Is it Worth Staying in Jasper After Banff?
100% yes in my opinion as long as you have the time.
If your trip is going to be a 6 or longer, than I think you can easily add Jasper into your itinerary. Jasper National Park is truly stunning and the town is adorable.
How Far is Golden from Lake Louise and Banff?
Golden is a decent trip from both Lake Louise and Banff. It’s about an hour trip to Banff and 90 minutes to Lake Louise. So, you’ll definitely get used to being on the road.
How do you get camping reservations in Banff?
All camping reservations in the National Parks can be reserved on the Parks Canada Reservations website. You can make an account and then create your reservations from there.
Can I visit Banff without a car?
Although it’s possible to explore Banff without a car, I highly suggest having one so you are more flexible. Otherwise, you can rely on public transportation or sign up for a tour in the area.
