4. Enjoy Whale Watching
During the winter months from January through March, Baja is a whale watcher’s paradise. Gray whales complete their annual migration from the Arctic all the way to Baja and back up again. These whales come to the Baja lagoons to breed and have calves in Baja. So you’ll often get to see mother whales with their babies 🐳. You can also see blue whales and humpbacks as well!
Gray whales complete the longest annual migration of any animal on earth at 12,000 miles!
One of the best parts of visiting Todos Santos is that you can easily watch these whales from the shorelines. Stare in awe as their blowholes go off or as they breach 🐋 the water. It’s a magnificent sight. If you’d rather get up close you can take one of the great whale tours in the area!
5. Visit Baby Sea Turtles
Visit Playa Tortugas for one of the most unique experiences: watching baby sea turtles 🐢 get released into the ocean.
The Tortugueros Las Playitas has a hatchling greenhouse where they help to protect the baby sea turtles. Their mission is to help restore the Pacific Leatherback population, which is currently critically endanged. This greenhouse is protected and kept at a stable temperature so that turtles have the best chance of making it into the ocean.
Go to Playa Tortugas every night around sunset to get the chance to see baby turtles be released into the ocean. It is free to go and it is so magical to watch these small creatures crawl along the sand and into the open waters. Unfortunately, turtles are not released every day, but you have to show up to find out if they have any that day. It’s worth it to see these cute animals!
6. Go Surfing
Cerritos beach is one of the ultimate surfing spots in Todos Santos. Surfers 🏄🏼♀️ at all levels come to this beach to hang 10 on the great waves. The waves here consistently good and there’s soft sand underneath, which is why it’s so popular.
Go here on any day and you’ll see plenty of surfers in the water. There are different areas of the water for varying levels. Stick to the shallow waters if you are a beginner or head to the back for some great waves 🌊 for regulars.
Luckily, for beginners, Cerritos beach is a wonderful place for a surf lesson. Lessons cost just $80 and they’ll teach you all the basics you need to know to grab a wave.
7. Hike for Great Views
Visit Punta Lobos and go on a stunning hike 🥾 to get panoramic views over the rocky outcrops of the ocean. This is the perfect day hike with the perfect distance, amazing landscapes, and the abilities to see whales from above! If you want to find this hike on All Trails it’s called “Old Port of Todos Santos.”
The trail starts at the old abandoned buildings of the Port before climbing up into the mountains. The path ascends up 400 feet in a little over a mile before you get to the top.
At the top, you can climb onto the rocks and take it all in. There are a variety of areas that you can walk around and explore at the top. If you want to go further, then you can hike all the way down to the water for a longer hike. We stopped at the top, because we loved the view from above. We sat there for a while just staring out over the horizon 🤩.
